THE STORY

“Hello, Praea.”

There’s only one being on Earth who calls Sloan Jordan by that name—her biological mother, a demon named Kasyade. So why did she answer Sloan’s best friend’s phone? When Sloan reaches Adrianne Marx’s apartment to investigate, all she finds is a half-written list of things to do before Sloan’s wedding:

1. Order booze for the reception.

2. Send the final guest count to the caterer.

3. Register for gifts.

4. Don’t forget to—

That’s where the to-do list ended. Mid-sentence with a scrawled line like Adrianne had been dragged away from the task. If Kasyade was involved in the abduction, Adrianne probably had been.

The reason? Ransom.

The price? Sloan’s unborn daughter, the most powerful angel in all of history.

But hell can’t rival the fury of an angry mother protecting her child, and until the baby is born, her incredible power is Sloan’s to wield. Now the prey becomes the predator as Sloan seeks to put an end to Kasyade forever.

EXCERPT FROM THE SACRIFICE

“Sloan, I did not sign up for this.”

Nathan folded his arms across his chest and shook his head as he stared up at the baby superstore. I walked around the front of my car to meet him on the sidewalk beside the “Stork Parking Only” sign on our parking space. The patch on the front of his hat had a picture of a pile of poop and a magnet.

“Yes, you did. You promised Warren you’d help keep my mind off of things,” I said.

He sighed and offered me his elbow. “That’s the only reason I’m here.”

“Hang on a second.” I looked back at the car. Reuel was sitting like a statue in his seat, probably hoping to be forgotten. “You coming?”

He shook his head furiously.

I narrowed my eyes. “You’re sworn to protect me, remember? What kind of guardian angel waits in the car?”

His chest heaved with heavy reluctance, and he pushed the door open. Under his breath, he swore in Katavukai.

I put my free hand on my hip. “I heard that.”

The hulking angel stuck his tongue out at me.

Nathan and I walked toward the store, and Reuel silently followed.

When we neared the empty traffic lane that passed in front of the store, Nathan did a sharp right turn, pulling me with him. “What are you doing?” I asked. “The front door’s right there.”

“But the crosswalk is over here.”

I looked around. There wasn’t a moving car in sight. “Nathan, it’s the middle of the day on a Thursday. This isn’t exactly Times Square.”

“Jaywalking’s against the law, Sloan. Safety first.”

I laughed as he led me across the white-dotted crosswalk. “This, coming from the guy who broke me out of jail and drove the getaway car not too long ago.”

“That was different.”

“You’re right. That was a felony.”

He laughed.

When we finally neared the entrance, the glass door slid open and the smell of baby powder and lotion floated out on the chill from the air conditioning. We walked inside, our mouths gaping as we took in the sight of thousands of square feet covered in all-things-baby. Aisle after aisle, shelves packed with pink and blue toys, gadgets, and gizmos stretched all the way up to the tall ceiling. A showroom full of mock nurseries was constructed in the center with every style of crib and rocking chair imaginable. And lined up against the wall, a fleet of strollers appeared ready for the starting whistle of the Daytona 500.

Nathan sighed loud enough for me to hear. “This is it. I’m officially in hell.”

Reuel looked around. “Nan. Nulterra illai esta cuanto rappar vatu.

I laughed.

“What did he say?” Nathan asked.

“He said, ‘Hell doesn’t have this many rubber ducks.’”
